Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre will present an autism-friendly performance of “The Nutcracker” on Dec. 27. It is believed to be the first such performance in the country.
The entire theater will be reserved for families with autistic children. One in 88 children in the U.S. has an autism spectrum disorder.
The production will be modified to avoid trigger points associated with the condition, including sudden changes of light and sound. In addition, there will be designated quiet and activity areas in the lobby, as well as special online material to prepare for the experience.
Discounted tickets for the autism-friendly performance will go on sale Sept. 3, when tickets for the rest of the run of “The Nutcracker” will be available for purchase.
