Hard-to-recycle items to be collected
Hard-to-recycle items such as tires, batteries and electronic waste will be collected at the North Huntingdon Public Works Building from 8:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 22.
Westmoreland Cleanways is sponsoring the event and representatives of Dan's Tires, Salandro's Refuse, the Appliance Warehouse and JVS Environmental will collect the items for recycling or proper disposal.
Westmoreland Cleanways will recycle fluorescent light tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs this year free for the first four and $1 for each after that. Large, freon-bearing appliances will be accepted for $20, but household and automotive batteries, clean scrap metal and without freon appliances are free.
The building is at 12319 Route 30.

Learn about fall seed collection
The Audubon Center for Native Plants will present a Fall Seed Collection program from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve, 614 Dorseyville Road, Fox Chapel.
Participants will learn to collect seeds this fall that can become thriving plants in next year's garden. The cost is $10; and $6 for members. Details: 412-963-6100
From parking spots to parks
A design workshop for the effort to turn parking spaces into parks for one day will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the Richard Doyno Collaborative in the Strip District.
Park(ing) Day, a project of the Young Architects Forum of the American Institute of Architects, will be Sept. 21. The program, which began in San Francisco in 2005, is aimed at showing the importance of public spaces. Participants take a parking space and create some sort of park-like spot, from a place with benches to take a rest to a site that promotes a cause or an idea.
The workshop Monday will help those interested learn how to participate. The workshop is at 29th Street and Penn Avenue.

Program offers Westmoreland glass products
The Westmoreland County Historical Society will present “Made in Westmoreland: Glass” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Calvin E. Pollins Library, 362 Sand Hill Road, Suite 1, Greensburg. The program highlights glass products made in Westmoreland County by Behrenberg Glass and J.H. Millstein Co.. The cost of the program is $5. Reservations are recommended.

‘Sunday Showcase' moves to WTAE
Howard Hanna Real Estate Services' “Sunday Showcase of Homes” is moving back to WTAE Channel 4 starting Sunday.
The show, which features detailed videos of homes for sale in the Pittsburgh area, will air at 11:30 a.m. It also can be viewed at www.howardhanna.com and www.YouTube.com/HowardHannaShowcase.
Composting workshops being planned
Westmoreland Cleanways is planning several backyard composting workshops this fall, each led by a Penn State Master Gardener.
The workshops are from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 15 at the Barn at Donohoe Center, Donohoe Road, Greensburg; Oct. 20 at Valley Landfill, 6015 Pleasant Valley Road, Irwin; and Nov. 3 at Oak Hollow Park, Timothy Drive, North Huntingdon.
Cost is $10, and pre-registration is strongly advised.
