Create your own pinhole camera from simple supplies to view the partial solar eclipse.
In anticipation of the Aug. 21 solar eclipse, the Westmoreland Library Network is planning a series of free programs for school-aged children on July 13 and 14 in the planetarium at Hempfield Area High School, along Route 136 near Greensburg.
Participants will learn about eclipses, including what the first total solar eclipse visible in the United States in 40 years will look like in this area and how to view it safely.
Sessions are scheduled each day for 1, 2, 3 and 5 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required.
Organizers note that the program will be held in a very dark room, which may be frightening for some children. School and library staff will be inside the planetarium to chaperone.
A waiting area with additional activities will be available for those who have accompanied children registered for the programs.
