California college student labels 'Veggie Tales' as 'racist'

Big Idea

Who knew vegetables could be racist?

Turns out it is possible, according to students at a "Whiteness Forum" held last week at Cal State San Marcos. Of course, it's not just any produce that's racist — it's the Christian cartoon series "Veggie Tales."

According to a report on The College Fix, the two-hour gathering featured students' poster-board projects assembled in a circle, each choosing a different subject that was deemed to be racist. Some focused on the NFL (because the majority of players are black, most coaches and owners white). Some targeted white females who support Trump (by pushing white supremacy).

But one female student's project titled, "Children in the Church," argued that "Veggie Tales" is racist because, "racial minorities were usually depicted as villains. They humanize vegetables using stereotypes shown in accents and racial indicators to identify people of color in the show."

For those who don't know, "Veggie Tales" is a children's TV series that tells Bible stories using cartoon vegetables — led by Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber. Just for the record, Bob is red and Larry is green.

In response to the racist claim, former "Veggie Tales" writer and narrator Eric Metaxes told PJ Media, "All vegetables are part of one race, even though they are of many colors. They are all descended from the same parents — the Adam and Eve of vegetables, who foolishly ate a forbidden fruit (irony?) and screwed everything up for all vegetables descended from them. At least I'm pretty sure that's the story."

According to her project, the Cal State student would likely argue that the Bible itself is the core of the racism.

"Whiteness in the Bible isn't just seen as 'power,' it's seen as 'good.'" her project states. "When kids see the good white character triumph over the bad person of color character they are taught that white is right and minorities are the source of evil."
