The first official photo of Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker was posted Sunday.

The new standalone movie is set to tell how “Arthur” became the Batman’s arch-nemesis the Joker.

TMZ posted photos and video showing Phoenix on the set of the filming.

Warner Bros. described the film as a story “of a man disregarded by society (that’s) not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale,” according to USA Today .

In recent years the Joker has been played by Jared Leto in “Suicide Squad” directed by David Ayer in 2016; Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight,” Christopher Nolan’s film from 2008; and Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s “Batman” from 1989. In the sixties Cesar Romero portrayed the villain for the TV show.

The new movie is slated for theaters next year on Oct. 4, 2019.
