Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell and Laurence Fishburne in 'Last Flag Flying'
Last fall, three big-name actors — Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne — were spotted around the area during filming of "Last Flag Flying."

You can get a first look at the fruit of their labors in the trailer for the drama, which is set to debut as the opening film at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 28.

The film is directed by Richard Linklater ("Boyhood," "Dazed and Confused"), who is currently filming "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?" at 31st Street Studios in Pittsburgh's Strip District.

"It's always special to be at the New York Film Festival, but to be premiering our movie on opening night, when you look at the half century of films that have occupied that slot, is a wonderful honor," Linklater said in a statement.

Other opening night films have included "Gone Girl," "Life of Pi," "The Queen" and "Mystic River."

"Last Flag Flying" stars Carell as a grieving father who in 2003 tracks down his Vietnam buddies — volatile Sal (Cranston) and quiet minister Mueller (Fishburne) — for a "gut-wrenching request" to help him bury his son, who was killed in the Iraq War. The journey takes them from Pennsylvania to Portsmouth, N.H.

Kent Jones, New York Film Festival director and selection committee chair, said, " 'Last Flag Flying' is many things at once — infectiously funny, quietly shattering, celebratory, mournful, meditative, intimate, expansive, vastly entertaining, and all-American in the very best sense."

While they were in town filming "Last Flag," the actors were spotted at several high-profile events. Cranston and Carell both campaigned in Pittsburgh for Hillary Clinton and attended a Penguins game, even getting a photo with owner Mario Lemiuex.

Cranston also was spotted at a Steelers-Dallas game at Heinz Field and he gave a talk about his memoir, "A Life in Parts," at City Theatre on Pittsburgh's South Side.

All three actors attended a talk by star astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse-Tyson in late November, with Fishburne even making an appearance on stage.

Fantastic show in Pittsburgh. @neiltyson gave a terrific presentation. Also, @RealLaureneFish, @SteveCarell, and @BryanCranston were there. pic.twitter.com/UezBgPNmNJ

This is the second time Carell has been in the area to film a movie. The first was 2014's "Foxcatcher."

"Last Flag Flying" is scheduled for limited release on Nov. 3 and wide release on Nov. 17.
