If you saved a snowball from last winter, you can take it to the Carnegie Science Center on June 21 and name your own price for general admission.
The center will celebrate the official start of summer with its annual Snowball Day, when visitors can banish the memory of winter by launching their icy orbs into the Ohio River from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Science Center will use its ultimate snowball slingshot again this year. Snow cones will be sold.
To mark the summer solstice, there will be two live science demonstrations to help visitors beat the heat.
“Science in a Scoop,” about the science of ice cream, will be shown at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. at the BodyStage.
“Freeze!” will explore the effects of super-cold liquid nitrogen on balloons, rubber balls and other objects at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. in the Works Theater. Science educators also will make “snow” from a special substance originally developed for the space program.
Visitors also can create paper snowflakes, try a hands-on ice moon activity at the planetarium, get a safe look at the sun through special telescopes and watch demonstrations featuring dry ice.
Normal rates apply for parking, food, Omnimax movies and laser shows.
