Wilco to play Benedum on Jan. 25, 2016.
With rock ‘n’ roll halfway into the retirement home at the moment, being a rockstar isn’t what it used to be.

Luckily for Wilco, the band was always way too mercurial and self-effacing for that sort of thing — or, at least, want to appear that way.

Despite their efforts, Wilco’s members became rock stars anyway. In fact, Wilco is one of the few bands that can fill an arena — or a massive theater such as the Benedum Center, which it likely will do Jan. 25 — and still make challenging, interesting new music instead of relying on hits from decades past.

Low-key Wilco mastermind Jeff Tweedy has left an enduring mark on music, first through epoch-defining alternative-country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, then through the inscrutable direction, veering from the classic American songcraft of Tom Petty to the noisy, sonic-boundary-pushing of Sonic Youth.

Wilco’s got a new album this year, “Star Wars,” but it was released as a free download with zero fanfare, in somewhat typical (for them) fashion.

The Wilco concert will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $38 to $53.
