Pittsburgh's Astorino acquired by Buffalo architectural firm

Pittsburgh architecture firm Astorino was acquired by CannonDesign, a Buffalo, N.Y., architecture firm, the companies said on Wednesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Astorino was founded in Pittsburgh in 1972 and was the architect for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and PNC Firstside Center, among other local projects.

Founder and Chairman Louis D. Astorino, 68, will stay on in an advisory role. CEO Louis P. Astorino, 39, will lead a nationwide growth initiative for advancing innovative methods of project delivery from the Pittsburgh office.

“This merger brings added value and opportunity to both organizations,” said Gary Miller, CEO of CannonDesign.

Astorino has 100 employees at its Downtown headquarters and offices in Abu Dhabi and Italy.

No layoffs in Pittsburgh are planned, said Robin Cibrano, executive director of CannonDesign's east region. The merged companies will be called Astorino-CannonDesign in Pittsburgh for a transition period, he said.

CannonDesign is 99 years old and is ranked sixth among architecture-engineering firms in the United States in Building Design + Construction's 2014 report. It has more than 1,000 employees in 12 offices in the United States, Canada, Shanghai and Mumbai.
