Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney on Thursday said it will acquire a law firm in Florida, adding 90 attorneys and professionals and increasing its presence in that state to six offices.

The addition of Fowler White Boggs will make Downtown-based Buchanan Ingersoll one of the 100 largest law firms in the United States, it said, with nearly 530 attorneys and government relations employees.

Buchanan has 450 attorneys and other workers, including 177 in Pittsburgh. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fowler will add expertise in real estate and land use in Florida, similar to Buchanan's in Pennsylvania, and half of its attorneys focus on litigation, said Buchanan, which is Pittsburgh's third-largest law firm.

Shareholders of both firms approved the acquisition, which becomes effective on Friday.

“This combination made sense from every angle,” said Jack Barbour, Buchanan's CEO. “We were looking to increase our bench in Florida, but only with professionals from a firm with the same cultural values and strategic objectives as ours.”

The combined firm will have nearly 30 lawyers in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Fowler's offices in Tampa, Fort Myers, Tallahassee and Jacksonville will bring the Florida attorney head count over 100.

Rhea Law, Fowler's CEO, said the firm's strength lies in economic development and it will utilize Buchanan's expertise in intellectual property, cybersecurity, health care and financial institutions. Fowler, based in Tampa, was founded in 1943.

Buchanan has offices in California, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington.
