Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. appears to be casting a line into its latest spinoff idea: a Field & Stream outdoor equipment store.
The Findlay-based retailer, which ventured into golf- and running-themed stores in recent years, has applied for a building permit to convert its former Dick’s location in Cranberry Square to a store based on the classic sports brand, said Ron Henshaw, Cranberry’s director of community development.
“Dick’s Sporting Goods is trying a new prototype at the old location,” he said Tuesday.
Based on renderings that Dick’s representatives showed township officials, the store “will have a whole new look, outside and in,” Henshaw said.
A Dick’s spokeswoman declined to comment.
Field & Stream Licenses announced in September it would sell intellectual property rights to trademarks for its hunting, fishing, camping and paddle categories to Dick’s. It did not disclose financial terms.
Before that, the Westport, Conn., company exclusively licensed those categories to Dick’s. It owns other trademarks.
Dick’s moved its Cranberry store in October to a larger, two-story space at Cranberry Crossroads on Route 228. A similar, bigger-format store opened about that time at South Hills Village in Upper St. Clair.
The Field & Stream store will have room for kayaks and other large equipment, Henshaw said.
“We are excited about it. It has a great look, and we think they are going to do well,” he said.
Dick’s filed its plan last week, and no hearings or other township approvals are needed because the project is a tenant making changes to its space, he said.
Dick’s, the largest full-line sporting goods retailer nationwide with 511 stores, set a goal to reach 900 or more stores. It reported a $50.1 million profit in its most recent quarter on sales of $1.31 billion. In 2012, the company opened 38 stores and relocated five others.
True Runner, the company’s first specialty gear store for running enthusiasts, opened in August on Walnut Street in Shadyside with a digital “go” board for running routes, lockers and a hydration station. A second store opened in St. Louis.
Dick’s tried The Golf Shop, an equipment store with swing simulators and indoor putting area, in Robinson before acquiring the Golf Galaxy chain in 2007 for $225 million. Golf Galaxy has 81 stores, including The Golf Shop’s former location.
Dick’s has placed more emphasis on store-in-store formats for names such as Under Armour, and it has private label deals for several brands such as Slazenger, Walter Hagen golf apparel and Reebok.
