First National to upgrade apps, install smarter ATMs
First National Bank is enhancing its mobile and branch services as customers gravitate toward digital banking.
The North Shore-based bank said Tuesday it would be upgrading mobile banking apps and installing digital kiosks and high-tech banking machines at branches in the first half of the year.
The strategy will integrate FNB’s physical and digital banking services as customers handle more transactions through their smartphones and laptops.
None of the company’s 3,200 employees will be cut as a result, spokeswoman Meghan Cole said.
“There’s no employee impact at this time,” she said.
The changes, however, will allow customers to handle more transactions themselves. They can browse and compare checking accounts on digital kiosks and use the upgraded teller machines to cash checks and chat with bank employees using a video screen after branch hours. Cole did not disclose where those employees would be located. The upgrades will be rolled out after FNB completes its purchase of Harrisburg-based Metro Bancorp in February.
Other banks, including PNC Financial Services Group, have been moving more of their banking services to the digital world. PNC has converted hundreds of branches to a “universal” model where customers can handle transactions on supercharged ATMs. PNC has shed jobs because the branches require fewer people to run them, and tellers have been retrained as “consultants” to answer customer questions about other financial products.
