Warehouse will double Leed’s space in Westmoreland Business and Research Park

Promotional products manufacturer Leedsworld Inc. said it will build a huge warehouse on the last large parcel of land available in Westmoreland County’s biggest industrial park.

The New Kensington-based company, which produces an array of bags, pens, drink ware, technology items, apparel and other corporate accessories, now boasts more than 900 workers. The expansion will be Leedsworld’s sixth expansion in the past 17 years, said David Farr, chief financial officer, in a statement.

The new, 500,000-square-foot building — about nine football fields in size — will more than double the company’s under-roof space in the Westmoreland Business and Research Park. The company, also known as Leed’s, will lease 28 acres at the park on the border of Upper Burrell and Washington townships.

The building will be used mainly as warehouse space, but about 20 percent will house “decoration operations,” said Farr. The first phase of construction should be completed by fall 2015, he said.

When the project will be finished or if the expansion will result in more jobs was not clear. Faar was not available for further comment, and no one else was authorized to comment, a spokesman said.

“This site has been our most successful development,” said Jason Rigone, executive director of the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corp., which developed the business park.

With Leed’s agreeing to occupy 28 more acres, Rigone said there are only a few small parcels remaining in the more than 500-acre park that was formed near the intersection of Routes 780 and 380 in the early 1990s.

In January, Leed’s agreed to buy a 22.5-acre parcel known as lot 53 for $1.35 million. An adjacent parcel that will be used for a retention pond ultimately was included in the deal, Rigone said.

This month, RBJ Partners Inc., a company connected to Leed’s contractor, Kacin Companies, bought the land for $1.36 million and will lease the property to Leed’s, Rigone said.

A message left at Murrysville-based Kacin was not returned.

Rigone said WCIDC is looking for more property near the business park or at least in that area of the county.

“It is in our strategic plan to expand opportunities,” Rigone said.

Rigone named several factors that have led to the park’s success — namely the early work that went into preparing the site and extending infrastructure, plus the location that is close to Pittsburgh but offers lower taxes and allows employees and customers easy travel that usually is in the opposite direction of commuter traffic.

“We’re very excited a company like Leed’s, which started as a Westmoreland County company, has had such tremendous growth,” Rigone said. “We’re excited to be able to support that growth.”

In 1997, Leed’s moved its 85 employees from Murrysville to the business park, starting off in a 100,000-square-foot building that included offices and warehouse space.

While Leed’s is the park’s largest company in both employees and space occupied, Rigone said there are 21 businesses employing nearly 3,000 people at the park.

Other major players include two Siemens factories that produce electrical power system controls and a Philips Respironics plant that manufactures sleep therapy products.
