Holidays are perfect for a fresh take on wearing sequins
This holiday season, find your shine in an embellished jacket.
It’s a new take on wearing sequins and a look you can carry well past the company party or family get-together, fashion experts say.
The look is a nice alternative to the standard sparkly top or dress — a holiday staple for most women, says Marissa Rubin, senior market editor for People StyleWatch.
“It adds just the right amount of shine without going overboard,” Rubin says. “Plus, it’s a great way to update your wardrobe year-round because you can throw it over any daytime look to make it evening appropriate.”
All-over sequins is the way to go if you want to wear the jacket as your statement piece. But Rubin suggests keeping the other elements of your outfit clean, simple and sleek, including accessories.
A few sparkles or embellished details on the collar or sleeves can be enough to complete any holiday look, and it can, in fact, complement other sparkly elements in your outfit, should you be so inclined to layer the shine.
An embellished jacket is quite versatile. It can be worn with skinny jeans and a silky top or to dress up a pair of boyfriend jeans and a plain T-shirt. It’s a great substitute for a cardigan, or even your favorite leather jacket, when paired with a full skirt or dress.
“Details such as sparkles are a thing of beauty during the holidays,” says Gregg Andrews, Nordstrom fashion director. “And this season, the idea of taking something that’s tailored, like a blazer or jacket, and glamming it up for an evening out with family and friends is both fun and festive. What’s nice is you can also wear this jacket for a long time. It will serve you well as an essential piece of your wardrobe after the party is over.”
There are many styles to choose from, beginning with an all-over sparkle jacket to one that has bling in some amounts of detail on the shoulders, lapels or arms. A little bit of sparkle can be just the right amount without being overpowering, Andrews says.
“Whatever you do, let the jacket be the focal point of the outfit,” Andrews says. “Hold back on oversized jewelry or wearing other clothing with embellishments.”
While black is the go-to choice women first think of when it comes to selecting a holiday outfit, go for another color if you want to stand out when you make an entrance, Andrews says. It’s a time of year when it’s OK to wear a head-turning garment, he says, pointing out that winter white is on trend, as well as darker shades, such as burgundy or navy.
“People will notice, and it’s definitely OK to look fun and festive this time of year,” Andrews says. “Everything about the holiday is dressed up — from the food to everyone’s houses and restaurants.
“You don’t want to look like Scrooge. People will take notice if you put in extra time with what you are wearing and if you are dressed for the occasion.”
Women are being fashion-inspired by a man’s tuxedo look for holiday, too. It’s a modern take on the party outfit, says Adam Moon, women’s fashion director at J.C. Penney. He suggests an embellished jacket over a jumpsuit is a more modern way to dress for the holiday.
“We are seeing leather being incorporated into these jackets as well as satin,” Moon says. “There are also some really interesting cuts that are feminine and flatter all women.
“I just love the idea of a tuxedo on a woman,” he says. “It does take a certain amount of confidence to wear a jacket like that, but if it’s tailored well and has a feminine cut to it, there is something beautiful about this look. It should fit through the shoulders and emphasize the bust line and hit right at the waist and hip.”
The jacket a woman chooses depends on her personal style, Moon says.
“It’s OK to step out of your comfort zone,” Moon says. “It’s the holiday season.”
