You can’t keep a good princess down. For too long.
Anne Hathaway, while on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, said a script for a third installment of her hit series “The Princess Diaries” exists and is being worked on right this moment.
We’ll wait while you collect yourself.
The comment came in response to a viewer question about rumors to that effect.
“There is a script for the third movie,” Hathaway said. “I want to do it. Julie (Andrews) wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it.
“It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”
And, yeah, Hathaway is on a first-name basis with the original Mary Poppins herself.
The first two films in the series, the original in 2001 and “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” in ’04, were pretty successful flicks, racking up more than $300 million globally. The movies followed the tale of Mia Thermopolis, who learns she’s the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia.
Hathaway, 36, didn’t say what the storyline would be, but it seemed pretty certain it would include Andrews, 83. Although one person who won’t be on board is original director Gary Marshall, who died in 2016.
