Kennywood gives sneak peek at Steel Curtain coaster construction
The Pittsburgh Steelers are always guaranteed to take fans on a wild ride — the season just ended and its aftermath as a case in point.
Kennywood’s new Steelers Country, due to open this year, will add a whole new dimension to the term “wild ride.”
The West Mifflin amusement park just released a video of construction of the attraction’s focal point — the Steel Curtain, advertised as the “Undisputed Champion of Roller Coasters.”
Just like Big Ben’s NFL-high passing 2018 stats, the Steel Curtain will be setting records of its own.
At 220 feet, it will be the highest coaster in Pennsylvania. Its nine inversions will be the most of any coaster in North America. And one of those inversions, at 197 feet, will be the tallest in the world.
The two-minute ride will travel at 75 miles per hour over 4,000 feet of track, carrying 24 passengers at a time.
When plans for Steelers Country were announced in July, Steelers vice president of sales and marketing Ryan Huzjak said the team and Kennywood are “pioneers,” because it’s the first time an amusement park has partnered with a professional sports team for a permanent project.
In addition to the Steel Curtain, Steelers Country will feature exclusive merchandise, midway games, food locations, a tailgating experience and the Steelers Experience, an indoor training facility with interactive exhibits.
Fans have been waiting eagerly since July for the one-of-a-kind collaboration.
There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, that could possibly be more Yinzer than a “Steeler Country” being added to Kennywood. People have already left their folding chairs to hold their spot in line. Saxophone guy will be at the opening. Pompeani will host.
