Neil Armstrong's gloves and visor worn during his historic first walk on the moon are going on temporary display at the Smithsonian Institution after the pioneering astronaut's death.

Both are usually kept in storage. They were designed to address the hazards of working on the lunar surface. Armstrong's helmet had two visors for moon walks, one with a gold reflective coating for U.V. protection and one with thermal protection.

The Apollo 11 artifacts were placed on public view Tuesday at the National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Northern Virginia. They will be exhibited for two weeks in a special display case.

NASA will hold a public memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday to honor Armstrong.

Wis. fall colors starting to show a little early

Fall colors are starting to show in Wisconsin a little ahead of schedule.

Trent Marty, who directs the Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Forest Protection, says the warm summer days recently along with the cooler nights help bring the colors out.

The Mercer area in Northern Wisconsin is already at 30 percent peak and Medford and Hayward areas — just a little south — are at 20 percent peak.

Marty says even though there were heat and drought conditions in Southern Wisconsin, the forests are in good shape. The northern forests had normal precipitation.

The intensity of the fall color season is dependent on the weather in September and October.

The state estimates fall colors contribute $5.5 billion to the Wisconsin economy through travel-related and equipment expenditures.

Spirit Airlines to begin service from BWI

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is welcoming Spirit Airlines as its newest carrier.

Spirit started service from BWI to Dallas-Fort Worth and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Thursday. The airport welcomed the first arriving Spirit flight with a “water salute,” a traditional greeting for new carriers in which fire engines spray water over the arriving aircraft.

The new carrier comes on the heels of the busiest month in the airport's history. More than 2.2 million passengers flew through BWI in July, eclipsing the previous mark, set in July 2011.

Spirit is a discount airline based in Miramar, Fla. It's known for offering low base fares, and charging fees for bringing luggage or using other services.
