Port Authority of Allegheny County delays cashless fare system

The Port Authority of Allegheny County’s light-rail system will not be going cashless next month as planned, the authority announced Wednesday.

The authority is not yet announcing a new start date for the cashless system on the T, which would rely on the system’s ConnectCards to pay fares, but it won’t be before October, said Adam Brandolph, a Port Authority spokesman.

The authority expected 10 ConnectCard machines, which dispense fare cards, to be delivered and installed in June, but manufacturing delays delayed them until October, the release said.

Issues also developed on existing ConnectCard machines.

“The goal of the policy is to make the customer experience better, but in order to make that happen all of the equipment must be available, functional and reliable,” Port Authority Interim CEO David Donahoe said in the release. “Because these items will take time to resolve, I’m not prepared to announce a new start date until I see the results of the work now underway, including field testing .”

Employees from the company behind the system, Massachusetts-based Scheidt & Bachmann, are on site working on the issues, the release said.

The authority plans to hold a 60-day public education period before launching the new service.

The cashless system will speed up boarding by allowing all train doors to be opened at more locations, the release said.
