Pittsburgh employees eligible for free childcare when schools are closed

Pittsburgh employees will have access to free childcare provided by the city on days city offices are open but Pittsburgh Public Schools are closed.

City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a $43,875 contract with Flexable LLC for professional childcare services on 15 days. They include school holidays, teacher in-service days and parent-teacher conference days.

The company also will provide the service during 20 community meetings the Mayor’s Office has scheduled this year, according to Tiffini Simoneux, the city’s early childhood manager.

“The way that they run their program is they provide pop-up childcare, so they bring all their material with them,” Simoneux said. “We’ll do it in one of our many conference rooms in the (City-County) Building depending on the number of kids who show up that day.”

She said the city would make sure community meeting locations have space for childcare. The meetings are designed to brief residents on such subjects as public safety and city budgeting.

Mayor Bill Peduto, who supports the program, sent the legislation to council in May, according to spokesman Tim McNulty.
