UPMC, Giant Eagle partner to provide treatment kiosks in stores

If you feel like you might be coming down with a cold while grocery shopping you can now make a stop by the pharmacy to talk with a doctor through the UPMC AnywhereCare kiosks.

UPMC and Giant Eagle have partnered to install the kiosks in several stores in the Pittsburgh area to be available to anyone in the state, regardless of their insurance status, to treat minor illnesses.

Natasa Sokolovich, executive director of telehealth for UPMC, said they wanted care to available to patients who might already be looking for over-the-counter remedies to illnesses.

She said the in-store locations will provide blood pressure cuffs, thermometers and otoscopes. Giant Eagle pharmacists and technicians are available to help with the kiosks and devices.

The new machines will be located initially at Giant Eagle stores at the Waterworks Shopping Plaza, 910 Freeport Road, near Fox Chapel; the Waterfront store, 420 East Waterfront Dr., Homestead; and in the Giant Eagle at 4010 Monroeville Blvd., Monroeville. The kiosks will be located in existing private consultation rooms next to the pharmacy.

Using the kiosk’s video camera, patients 3 years old, with a parent or guardian, and older with a variety of non-urgent symptoms, ranging from sore throats to earaches, can be seen within minutes by a health care professional who will assess the symptoms and recommend a treatment plan. Clinicians can be contacted via the kiosks during regular pharmacy hours in participating Giant Eagle stores.

Adam Zakin, senior director of new business development at Giant Eagle Pharmacy, said they are excited to partner with UPMC to make care convenient for customers. Giant Eagle hopes to expand the program to other stores in the future.

The cost of an AnywhereCare visit varies from no cost to $49, depending on insurance coverage. Prescriptions, if needed, are paid separately by the patient, and are sent electronically to the patient’s chosen pharmacy.
