The 13th Street tunnel and boat ramp in Sharpsburg will remain closed indefinitely after being damaged by ice this winter.
“It will be closed for some time,” Borough Manager Bill Rossey said.
There is no cost estimate yet for repairs. The road and ramp were closed in mid-January by police who cited safety issues after thick layers of ice formed on the James Sharp Landing at the Allegheny River, Chief Tom Stelitano said.
There is no access to the road between Main Street and the dock.
Rossey said the damage will be addressed once the weather breaks.
“There was damage to trees, trash cans, benches and dock,” he said.
The boat launch problems will likely take longer to address than the 30-foot fishing pier, which could reopen sooner if crews can clean away the debris.
Stelitano said he reviewed the situation with Emergency Management Coordinator Dennis Lane and the decision to keep the street closed was made to ward off potential hazards.
