Proposed scheduling changes at Dorseyville Middle School are expected to be finalized this month.
Principal Jon Nauhaus published an update on the Fox Chapel Area School District website where he and Lisa Lang, president of the Fox Chapel Area Educators Association, said the plan should soon be ready to move forward.
Changes would be implemented for the 2019-20 school year.
“Administration, teachers and parents have been working together on what a new schedule might look like,” Lang said. “The teachers presented options to the administration, which continues the process of ensuring a schedule is developed that will meet the needs of all students.”
Earlier this year, the school board voted to modify the middle school schedule to increase the time students spend in math and science while still providing teens time in art, music and gym.
As it was proposed initially, DMS students will continue to have a home base period as well as gym.
The board was met with opposition from some 800 people who signed a petition asking for more review of the changes, saying they were concerned with longer class periods and a narrow scope of subjects.
Since the approval in March, school officials have been reviewing recommendations from the teacher’s union and from parents.
Nauhaus said administration hopes to have a proposal to move forward with by the end of November, prior to the board’s meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 3.
