Shady Side Academy students collect bus load of food for Edgewood church
Second-graders at Shady Side Academy Junior School didn’t forget the true meaning of the holidays.
Students collected a record-setting total of nearly 3,500 non-perishable items for the annual second grade food drive, Oct. 29 through Nov.15.
The class delivered a busload of donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood, just in time to be distributed to needy families for Thanksgiving. The Junior School has partnered with the church for the food drive for more than 20 years.
The month prior to Thanksgiving, collection boxes are placed in each classroom of the Junior School and second-graders take on the task of educating their schoolmates about hunger and encouraging them to support the drive. Students create posters and fliers to promote the drive and practice their public speaking skills by making announcements.
Second grade teachers are Jennifer Riscili, Kristin Litster and Nicole Gruden.
