Fox Chapel Garden Club’s ‘Glitter and Glow’ benefits local projects
The Fox Chapel Garden Club takes “fresh” seriously when it comes to its annual holiday fundraiser, Glitter and Glow.
Handmade, fresh green floral centerpieces, wreaths, mantel pieces and outdoor arrangements will be the focus of the shopping fundraiser Dec. 5, an annual event benefiting the community.
Many of the greens come from the members’ gardens, said longtime club member Carol Papas.
“The offerings are well-priced, handmade and nothing like what you’d get from a florist,” Papas said. “It’s a showcase featuring our talents and interests.”
From 6:30 to 9 p.m at the Fox Chapel Golf Club, the event also will feature a silent auction and offer door prizes and surprise drawings. A cash bar and hors d’ oeuvres are paired with exclusive shopping for an ideal girl’s night out, club President Wendy Mitchell said.
“Its an opportunity for women to get together with their girlfriends and get the decorations they want right after Thanksgiving,” Mitchell said.
The event continues to grow each year, and club members expect more than 200 guests this December. Tickets are sold online for $35 on the garden club’s website.
Proceeds from the event are funneled into the community, according to Mitchell, with money divvied between the Lauri Ann West Community Center, the St. Margaret Foundation’s Garden of Hope and programs at the Fox Chapel Area High School.
The uniqueness of the event stems from its handmade items designed especially for the cause, directly from the creativity of the garden club’s members, Mitchell said.
“It’s all such great camaraderie for our club, and we all love to come together and do this each year,” Mitchell said.
And the friendships are what Papas, a garden club member for 28 years, loves most about the fundraiser.
“We hold workshops, help each other make design decisions and just talk about our lives,” Papas said. “It’s even better that 100 percent of the proceeds go towards supporting our mission.”
