Crawford Pool has been a mainstay of the community for 52 years, but now is in need of some TLC in the offseason.

Shaler's Crawford Swimming Pool at Kiwanis Park will not open as planned for Memorial Day weekend, the result of rainy weather delaying repairs of the pool's liner, according to township Manager Tim Rogers.

If the weather cooperates, he anticipates opening the pool for the season on May 31. The township will update its website at www.shaler.org with a confirmed opening date.

The good news for Shaler residents is the Hampton Community Swimming Pool will honor Crawford Pool passes during the delay, according Shaler's Facebook page. The pool is located 3101 McCully Road, Allison Park.

Crawford passes can be purchased at the township office at 300 Wetzel Road, Glenshaw.

Shaler is enacting the following changes to its pool application process:

• All applicants must provide standard passport-size photos attached with their applications. Applicants mailing their applications should write their names on the backs of the photos to ensure that passes are properly assigned.

• To receive the resident rate for the season pool pass, applicants must provide proof of residency for all individuals listed on the form. See the township website for acceptable forms of residency proof.

• The discounted 10-day pass is only available to Shaler Township residents and also requires proof of residency.

• There will no longer be a discounted daily rate for residents at the gate.

• There are “minimal increases” for season pass and daily admission rates.

The township's Facebook page also stated that Shaler will continue to hold its swim lesson registration, starting at noon May 27 at Crawford Pool.

Rogers said that the weather has not affected installation of the pool's accessible entry.

During the 2018 offseason, the township plans to repair the pool's waterslide and add a spray park, township engineer Matt Sebastian said following a March Shaler Commissioners meeting.

More than 50 years old, Crawford is Shaler's only public pool.
