‘Little Shop of Horrors’ coming to Shady Side Academy
Shady Side Academy students plan to shake up the stage with a rock comedy that follows a woeful florist in his pursuit of love.
This year’s winter musical, “Little Shop of Horrors,” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8-9 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Hillman Center for Performing Arts on the Senior School campus, 423 Fox Chapel Road, Fox Chapel.
Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased online at shadysideacademy.org/theater , by phone at 412-968-3040, or at the door.
Some content may not be suitable for children 12 and younger.
Based on the 1960’s movie with a cult following and the later Broadway smash, the comedy takes audience members on a wild tale that includes romance found with the help of a man-eating plant.
Faculty members Dana Hardy-Bingham and Dan Brill are the show’s director and music director, while more than 60 students will participate in the cast, crew and orchestra pit.
Senior Koji Shimada and sophomore Annabel Everett, both of Fox Chapel, lead the colorful cast of characters. A third principal character is the Audrey II plant puppet, which is being constructed by a team of students led by senior Lucie Greene of Fox Chapel and senior Lily Scheele of O’Hara. Audrey II starts out as a seedling in a small pot and “grows” to be 4-feet tall and 7-feet long. Her movements will come to life thanks to work by junior Sanjna Narayan of Fox Chapel, the primary puppeteer.
