Convicted Indiana serial killer David Maust, who killed three teens and buried their bodies in a basement, has died a day after hanging himself in his cell.

A jail guard found Maust found hanging from a braided bed sheet early Thursday and he died Friday at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, Ind., the Chicago Tribune reported.

Maust allegedly left a seven-page suicide note that reportedly mentioned five killings and apologized for his crimes.

Maust was to have been transported from the Lake County Jail to a state prison on Thursday to begin serving a life sentence. In addition to the three teenagers killed in Hammond, Ind., in 2003, Maust was convicted in 1981 of killing an Illinois teen and served time for manslaughter while a member of the U.S. Army.
