Two Glassport residents have been charged after police found 14 marijuana plants among other items in their borough home.
Glassport police, assisted by Liberty police, executed a search warrant Saturday at approximately 9:20 p.m. in the 400 block of Broadway Street.
Rory Shelton, 48, and LouAnn Yeager, 53, were charged with 19 counts of possession of marijuana, 14 counts of cultivating, growing or manufacturing marijuana, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of possession with intent to deliver.
Glassport deputy police Chief Shawn DeVerse said after police received complaints about the Broadway Street residence, he and Glassport police Officer Nick Caito went to the residence and were able to view the marijuana plants from the sidewalk. He said officers then obtained a search warrant Saturday from Glassport Magisterial District Judge Armand A. Martin.
When police approached the home with the warrant, DeVerse said officers saw Shelton through the door holding a scanner and Liberty police Officer Ray Johnson immediately secured him.
'Myself and Officer Caito went right up into the yard to clearly identify the plants and secure them,' DeVerse said. 'He had three plants hanging in his basement to dry them out and the rest were in his yard.'
Glassport police Officer Michael Piccini also assisted in the marijuana bust.
Glassport Citizens Hose Fire Co. No. 1 Chief Wayne Lewis was called to provide lighting while the plants were seized.
Police also confiscated three small bags of suspected marijuana, one pill bottle half full of suspected marijuana, a scanner, drug paraphernalia, a security badge and $58 in cash.
Glassport police K-9 Zen also searched the residence.
DeVerse said from the size of the marijuana plants, Shelton likely was growing them since spring.
He said Saturday was a small- to medium-level drug bust for Glassport police.
'This isn`t the first we`ve done recently and it`s not going to be the last,' DeVerse said.
Shelton was sent to Allegheny County Jail while Yeager was sent to a local hospital for treatment of a medical condition. Yeager was supposed to be sent to the jail after she got out of the hospital. No additional information about her condition was available at presstime.
'The officers made a great arrest here,' Glassport Mayor Michael Evanovich said. 'They did their homework. If you`re doing something wrong or breaking the law, we are coming for you. We are releasing the hounds. We`re going to take the town back — little by little.'
