Allegheny County will close the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge again this weekend, hopefully for the last time, officials said.
The bridge will be closed from 12 a.m. Saturday to 12 a.m. Sunday so crews can repave the approach ramps on the Duquesne side of the bridge. Last weekend was supposed to be the last closure, but stormy weather prevented all the work from being completed, said Doug Aiken, manager of construction engineering at Allegheny County Public Works.
"We thought that last week would be the last one, but when that thunderstorm hit we lost four or five hours of production," Aiken said. "Hopefully this 24-hour period will be enough to get that last bit of pavement done, if the weather cooperates."
Traffic from McKeesport will be detoured down Lysle Boulevard/West Fifth Avenue to the Mansfield Bridge, left onto Lebanon Church Road, left onto Camp Hollow Road, left onto Phillip Murray/Lebanon School Road and left back to Route 837. Traffic from Duquesne should follow the detour in reverse, though locals familiar with the roads may find their own shortcuts.
Aiken said other construction projects in the area and unclear detour signs snarled traffic around the Mon Valley last weekend. A detour that should have taken a half-hour took some drivers more than an hour to navigate.
