National Orienteering Day will be observed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 18 at Jennings Environmental Education Center, Slippery Rock. The deadline is Friday for participants to register online at www.dcnr.state.pa.us/calendar or call the center at 724-794-6011. The program is designed for people 12 and older. Those attending are asked to take a sack lunch and dress for the weather. Orienteering is the art of navigating through unfamiliar areas quickly and efficiently using a map and compass. During the program, participants will learn basic map and compass skills and have an opportunity to practice those skills on an orienteering course.

Ronald McDonald will visit schools

Fast-food mascot Ronald McDonald will present anti-bullying assemblies Friday at two elementary schools. The mascot will visit Elderton Elementary School at 9 a.m. and Kittanning Township Elementary School at 1:30 p.m. Since August 2003, Ronald McDonald has been recognized as the "Chief Happiness Officer" of the McDonald's Corp. The mascot hosts assemblies designed to instruct youngsters about the dangers of bullying, about how to have positive interactions with others and about other good character habits.

9/11 program set in West Kittanning

The Armstrong Indians Youth Football Organization will hold a 9/11 program at 9:30-9:45 a.m. Saturday at the West Kittanning fire hall field. There will be fire trucks representing area departments and the Kittanning Firemen's Band color guard. Taps will be played to commemorate the tragic events that took place nine years ago.

AFSCME Retirees' meeting canceled

AFSCME Retirees' Sub Chapter 8406 will not meet today. The center at 125 Queen St., Kittanning, is closed for one day only. The next meeting will be held Oct. 13. Retired public employees are welcome.

Rent-A-Center sets food collection

Rent-A-Center at Franklin Village Mall, East Franklin, will participate this month in a "Soup to Nuts" campaign to benefit community food pantries. Customers and community members may drop off at the store a can of soup, a jar of peanut butter or other nonperishable canned goods, which will be given to the Armstrong County Community Action Agency. Contributions also may be dropped off at Community Action.

Kittanning schedules human tunnel

Kittanning Football Alumni, including former coaches, players, managers and statisticians, are invited to join in making a human tunnel at 6:45 p.m. Friday at the high school football field to show support for the current players.

Square dance slated Saturday

An oldtime square dance with music by the Ken Burkett Band will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday in The Towne Hall, Route 422, Elderton. Donation is $6; those 12 and younger are admitted free. There will be round, square, polka, and jitterbug dancing. Singles and beginners are welcome.

Turkey dinner in Kittanning Township

A turkey dinner will be served thresherman style from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Kittanning Township fire hall. The cost of tickets is $8.50, adults; $5.50, children; and free to 5 and younger. Takeouts will be available for $9. For takeouts, call 724-548-7290 between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. the day of the event. The fire hall is four miles east of Kittanning on Route 422.

• The Allegheny Power/West Penn Power Retirees will hold their monthly meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday in King's Restaurant, Hilltop Plaza, East Franklin.

• The Kittanning High School Class of 1949 will hold its monthly luncheon at 11 a.m. Thursday in The Villa in Cadogan. Classmates, spouses, and friends are welcome.

• The Eljer Retirees' Club will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday in the local union hall on Route 85, Kittanning.

• Chapter 2 of the Tri-Country Music Association will hold its monthly meeting, dinner and dance at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Ford City Veterans of Foreign Wars post home in Pattonville. Those attending are asked to take a covered dish. The cost at the door is $3.

• The Latin American Beneficial Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the club banquet hall.

• The Kittanning High School Class of 1947 will meet for its monthly get-together at noon Friday in Theresa's Royle Allegheny Restaurant, West Kittanning. Members and friends are welcome.

• The Kittanning Soccer Boosters will meet at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the soccer field.

• Ron Gancus, president and CEO of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, will speak at a meeting of the Armstrong County Genealogical Society at 2 p.m. Sunday in the genealogical library next to the Armstrong County Historical Society, 300 N. McKean St., Kittanning.

• The Kittanning Public Library board of trustees will meet at 4 p.m. Monday in the library.

• Kittanning American Legion Post 122 will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in Super Shooters, Route 422 east. Questions may be directed to 724-859-1080. Meetings are held the second Monday of each month. There are no meetings in January, February, July, August, and December.

• The Cowansville American Legion Post 325 Auxiliary will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the post home.
