Background: Dr. Friedlander was a professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School and vice chairman of neurosurgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston until last month.

Noteworthy: He started June 1 as the head of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He will begin seeing patients and performing surgeries at UPMC at the end of June. He treats complex cerebrovascular disorders and brain tumors, and studies cell death in neurological diseases, brain injuries and spinal cord injuries.
