Noteworthy: The Washington County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has selected Spencer as the 2012 recipient of its Human Rights Award.

Family: Wife, Janet; daughter, Tammy, 38; son, Michael, 33

Occupation: President and chief executive officer of Uptown-based Randall Industries, one of the largest minority-owned chemical manufacturing companies in the nation

Background: Spencer, who grew up in Washington, formerly chaired the Hill House Association in the Hill District and Goodwill Industries of Pittsburgh. He and his wife were instrumental in reopening the Martin Luther King Reading and Cultural Center in the Hill District after it closed because of financial constraints.

Quote: "Being honored by people in my hometown, I think, is very significant. When your hometown recognizes you for what you've done, I think that is very notable."
