Oakmont cuts paving plans

OAKMONT - In a move to keep within the borough's budget, council has cut the amount of paving it will do this year by 14 percent.

The original amount council had set aside for paving this year was $263,000. That is being reduced to $225,000, a 14 percent decrease.

Second Street and part of Oak Street has been cut from the paving list, Borough Manager Roger Dunlap Jr. said, as have four handicapped accessible ramps.

The roads to be paved are:

&#149 Elmcrest Road from Woodland Avenue to Wade Lane;

&#149 Eighth Street from Virginia Avenue to near Hulton Road;

&#149 Third Street from Archie Street to Pennsylvania Avenue;

&#149 Commons Drive from Mattes Drive to New London Lane;

&#149 Washington Avenue from Eleventh Street to Mattes Drive;

&#149 Oak Street from Fourteenth Street to Fifteenth Street.

In other news:

&#149 The borough is seeking money from the state Department of Community and Economic Development for several projects, with the help of Allegheny County officials.

It is hoping for $220,000 for the Allegheny River Boulevard project, which would pay for repair work from Fourth Street to Hulton Road.

The borough is also applying for just over $76,000 for the Maple Alley retaining wall project.

It also is seeking $24,600 for a handicap ramp project in which it plans to create wheelchair ramps in 44 places on sidewalks throughout the borough.

&#149 A planning commission meeting is set for 7 tonight at the borough building to discuss the housing development planned for the former Edgewater Steel Co. property. Developers Brooks and Blair will request zoning changes.

&#149 Council has approved a one-year extension to the existing oil and gas lease agreement with Snyder Brothers of Kittanning. Solicitor Robert Shoop said that the gas well brings in only $1,000 yearly to the borough.

The well is located in Riverside Park.
