• A Sunscape Demonstration Project is in place at Scalo Solar LLC, a unit of Burns & Scalo Roofing Co,. at its Pittsburgh headquarters. "The environmental and financial benefits that green roofs generate are numerous," said Jack Scalo, president. They reduce storm water run-off, improve insulation, decrease urban heat and extend the roof's lifespan, he said. The roof, developed with Carlisle SynTec, Carlisle, Pa., features 12,000 pounds of lightweight growth media and 2,000-plus square feet of Carlisle Roof Garden Vegetative Sedum tiles, which are watered by a sub-irrigation system. The project features a rooftop solar installation using three solar technologies.
• A $504,000 project to improve pedestrian safety on East Carson Street, South Side, is under way. The work, by Michael Facchiano Contracting Inc., includes traffic signals, drainage improvements, sidewalks, curb ramps, street lighting, pavement markings and other construction at sidewalk intersections from 20th to 22nd streets. Intermittent lane closures will occur between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m through early September. South Side Local Development Co. is the sponsor, using money from PennDOT, the Federal Highway Administration and the Heinz Endowments.
• East Liberty Place North, a 54-unit apartment building with 1,000 square feet of retail space, received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for homes from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building, which was fully leased within 60 days, opened in May 2010. A second phase, East Liberty Place South, is awaiting approval from lenders. It will have 60 apartments, 13,000 square feet of commercial space, and will be built by The Community Builders.
• CresaPartners LLC formed a strategic alliance with international real estate adviser Savills. This will allow CresaPartners to serve clients in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. Kim Ford is managing principal in the Pittsburgh office.
• K&L Gates LLP law firm received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its offices -- 250,000 square feet on 14 floors at K&L Gates Center, Downtown.
