Salaries to rise for Derry school employees

The Derry Area School Board has reached two-year compensation agreements with administrative and supervisory employees.

The salary increases in the agreements, which run until June 30, 2013, are based on the salary increases negotiated for the recently approved contract with the Derry Area Education Association.

For administrators, the salary hike is equal to 1.5 times the average salary increase negotiated with the teachers union. For supervisors, the salary raise is equal to 1.3 times the average increase.

As for benefits, the district will provide medical coverage identical to the teachers' plan, with the same co-premium. The district will pay the full cost of family dental and vision plans identical to the ones negotiated by the union.

The board approved the agreements by 5-0 votes. Directors James Beatrice, Stephen Kozar, Kelley McGinnis and Ted Schmidbauer were absent from the meeting.

Administrative employees include the director of special services, director of support services, technology coordinator and all the building principals. The superintendent, assistant superintendent and business manager are not included in the agreement.

Supervisory employees include the food service director, fiscal manager, buildings and grounds supervisor, assistant buildings and grounds supervisor, and athletic director.

In other matters, the board voted to furlough three food service employees. The district will not offer employment for next year to Deborah Doverspike, Karen Hilty and Jane Mazurek.

The board furloughed a number of teachers and support staff employees at its meeting earlier this month because of declining student enrollment.

During the June 23 meeting, the board is scheduled to adopt a final budget for 2011-12. The tentative budget included no property tax increase for next year.
