No one on the board is likely to get everything the way he or she wants.
As the Armstrong School Board sets its plan for its buildings -- including paring four high schools down to two -- there will be efforts to derail those plans based on emotion.
The directors, however they personally feel about aspects of the plan, must persevere. We can only imagine public support would be much appreciated
Anyone who has been paying even remote attention to state and federal news has to realize that the cost of public education must be reduced.
The Armstrong School District cannot continue to provide education as it has been in this huge district that runs through the entire center of the county. Mergers of various districts over the years have left the current board and taxpayers with this problem -- one that has been haltingly addressed.
Current directors deserve credit for trying to work this matter out, to set the district on the best path possible -- although no doubt one that won't be acceptable to everyone.
Unfortunately, director Sara Yassem, who represented the 3rd District and favored the last board majority's plan to do a wide-ranging renovation of current buildings, has resigned and the board must name someone else.
No one on the board is likely to get everything the way he or she wants. But quitting is not the answer.
It is all part of the emotionalism that too often holds sway at public meetings, even with people disrupting discussion with snide remarks.
As we have argued before -- and do so here again -- the district must develop a sense of community. There is much that should bind the district, history and rural beauty to name just two considerations.
Many school districts and their constituents have gone through such tough times and ultimately found their districts in better positions to educate their children.
Taxes are not going to go down; the district must fight for a plan that will keep them from going up by leaps and bounds.
Monday, the board agreed to a start.
To say it is about time would be an understatement.
