A second Penn State University fraternity where a Unity man was seen hours before he went missing and fell to his death has been put on probation.
Penn State's Interfraternity Council, a student-run governing board, placed Alpha Tau Omega on probation Tuesday night after receiving word that State College police were investigating whether somebody at the house provided 18-year-old Joe Dado, a 2009 Greater Latrobe High School graduate, with alcohol.
Dado, a freshman engineering student, died of head trauma after falling 17 feet sometime after leaving another fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta, in the early-morning hours of Sept. 20. His body was found the next day.
The action against Alpha Tau Omega means the fraternity cannot participate in Interfraternity Council business or hold social events, at least until the police investigation is completed, said Bill Read, the council's executive vice president. The same action was taken last week against Phi Gamma Delta, which is known as Fiji.
Read said the council did not suspend Alpha Tau Omega until they received confirmation from police that there was an active investigation regarding activity at that house. That same confirmation had come last week regarding the Fiji house, Read said.
State College police Capt. Dana Leonard confirmed his department is conducting furnishing alcohol to minors investigations at two locations, 319 N. Burrowes St., which houses Phi Gamma Delta, and 321 East Fairmount St., which is the home of Alpha Tau Omega.
Leonard said information gathered by Penn State University police during the search for Dado led to the borough police investigation.
Toxicology tests to determine whether Dado was under the influence of alcohol have not been completed.
Wynn Smiley, executive director of Alpha Tau Omega, said he has no reason to believe Dado consumed alcohol during his brief tour of the chapter house.
