UPMC and a Massachusetts technology company will create 20 new jobs in Pittsburgh through a project to develop new speech-recognition software for doctors and hospitals.

The 10-year, multi-million-dollar collaboration between UPMC and Nuance Communications Inc. seeks to "improve the quality and efficiency of care by creating a more complete and accurate electronic medical record, first across UPMC and then more broadly across the healthcare industry," the companies said in a statement this morning.

UPMC and Nuance declined to say how much each was investing in the project. But the partnership is expected to result in 20 new jobs at UPMC's Technology Development Center, in East Liberty's Bakery Square. The Technology Development Center currently employs about 40 workers.

Nuance, a publicly traded company based in Burlington, Mass., posted more than $1 billion in sales last year as a maker of speech recognition and image capture technologies for businesses, consumers and healthcare providers.
