Woman dead in California after garage fire spreads to house

A woman was killed Monday night in a fire in Washington County.

Firefighters were called at 8:19 p.m. for a report of a garage fire in California, a county emergency dispatcher said. When they arrived on the scene, they reported that the fire had spread to the house on Monroe Way and that a person might be trapped inside, authorities said.

Firefighters found Mildred Shrum, 87, in the home, the Washington County Coroner's Office said. She died at about 9:20 p.m., the office said. The cause and manner of death are pending.
