‘Dentistry from the Heart’ participant offers free fillings and more in Monroeville
Dentists get a bad rap sometimes, and many people have a genuine dislike or sometimes fear of the dental office.
On Wednesday, however, there is at least one thing patients at Dr. Larry Suher’s Monroeville office won’t have to be afraid of: the bill.
August 8 marks the ninth year that Dr. Suher will participate in the national “ Dentistry from the Heart ” initiative, inviting any and all in for a day of free dental care for patients in need.
“I wanted a way to give back to the community,” said Dr. Suher, who first heard about the program through a colleague at a business meeting. “People without medical insurance, people who are homeless, people who are unable to afford dentistry.”
Anyone 18 years or older needing a cleaning, filling or extraction is welcome to register beginning at 8 a.m. to be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.
Dr. Suher said in the past, he’s seen between 75 and 100 patients throughout the course of the day. He said extractions are the most common.
“It’s sad sometimes, because there are people who need an extraction, they’re in pain and they can’t afford to have it done,” he said.
In addition to the Monroeville event, Dentistry from the Heart days will take place later this month in North Carolina, Nebraska, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Connecticut and Ohio. For a full schedule of events, see the Dentistry from the Heart website .
Patients are asked to dress for the weather and bring chairs, water or snacks, since the program’s popularity sometimes means a full waiting room and a line out the door.
“If we can help one person or 500, we’re happy to do that,” Dr. Suher said.
Dr. Larry Suher Family Dental is at 4328 Old William Penn Highway in Monroeville. For more, call 412-373-7777 or see SuherDental.com .
