Monroeville has lost another landmark.

The building that housed the Penn Monroe Grille since 1950 has been torn down. That year was shortly after Route 22 was widened, and the same year the nearby Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange opened. The Miracle Mile Shopping Center, which established Monroeville as a retail hub, was still four years in the future.

Al and Rose Pugliano and their family operated the Penn Monroe as a neighborhood bar and restaurant as scores of corporate eateries arose along the highway. The restaurant closed in February 2016.

In 2009, a developer proposed using the site at 2985 William Penn Highway as part of a four-story, 92-room Hilton Home2 Suites hotel; however, that project never came to fruition.

According to Allegheny County property records, the site was sold to Zokaites Properties, a McCandless developer, in October 2015.

Monroeville Manager Tim Little said Zokaites has not submitted a development plan for the site to the municipality.

Telephone and email messages left with Zokaites were not returned.
