Murrysville budget would hold line on taxes |

Murrysville Council last week unveiled a preliminary 2015 budget that calls for officials to hold the line on taxes.

Council is considering a $14.5 million proposal that projects a 2-percent increase in expenses for the general fund, which covers the cost of standard municipal operations, and requires no increase the property-tax rate.

The $8.9 million general fund includes just under a 2-percent budget bump for the police department and a 4.6-percent decrease in spending on fire and emergency services. The current property tax rate in Murrysville is 12.15 mills.

This year, one mill produces about $320,000 for the municipality. With the completion of the Blue Spruce Shoppes development, finance director Diane Heming said, that is expected to rise to $328,000 next year.

Salaries for the 58 full-time and 5 part-time municipal employees are projected to account for $3.9 million.

The proposal also outlines about $3.3 million for 28 capital-improvement projects next year. The lion’s share of that — about $1.5 million — is slated for road paving.

Six other capital-improvement projects cross the $100,000 threshold — emergency-equipment payments, $295,000; replacing the Washington Street culvert and wall, $250,000; Twin Oaks road improvements, $200,000; Branthoover Road reconfiguration, $125,000; the purchase of three new police cars, $105,000; and Sardis Road improvements, $100,000.

Guide-rail upgrades and the installation of a digital announcement sign along Route 22 will be carried over from 2014 into next year’s capital program.

Council is expected to vote on the 2015 budget in December.
