It isn’t every day that one gets the chance to sing with the backing of an Italian orchestra.

It’s even less common to earn an honorable mention in the Bologna International Vocal Competition, held annually in Bologna, Italy.

Saint Vincent College senior Anthony Massetto, 21, of Murrysville got to do both this summer, part of an extended trip to the capital of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region to study with vocal coaches and conductors.

“Given that I primarily sing repertoire in Italian, it was an intriguing opportunity to be able to study Italian in Italy while being taught by native speakers of the language,” Massetto said. “The opportunity to study in a culture that lives and breathes opera was one that I could not pass up.”

Massetto spent 20 days in Italy, where he studied alongside students from all over the world and performed in the piazza outside the Teatro Comunale di Bologna opera house.

“I think opera music is incredibly unique,” Massetto said. “It’s amazing that this music was written in the 1500s and 1600s, and it’s still able to be performed today.”

Thomas Octave, associate professor of music, stressed the value of the experience.

“The experience Anthony had at the Bologna Academy and Competition is incredible for his growth and development as a young artist,” Octave said. “We are so proud of his accomplishments at such a young age. He has represented Saint Vincent College so well.”

A vocal performance major, Massetto plans to pursue a master’s degree in vocal performance after graduation.

“Performing is the opportunity for me to share with people the gifts that God has blessed me with,” he said.
