No. 1 Quakers and No. 2 Hurricanes brace for rematch

The Section 2-4A rematch between the Quaker Valley and New Castle boys basketball teams takes center stage Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Quaker Valley High School.

QV and New Castle are the No. 1 and No. 2 teams, respectively, in the latest Trib HSSN WPIAL 4A rankings.

The Quakers won the first meeting 67-48 on Jan. 4.

New Castle has won six of seven since the loss and leads the section with a 7-1 record. The Hurricanes are 13-3 overall.

Quaker Valley, 13-2 overall, is tied for second with Ambridge at 6-2. The Quakers stepped away from section play Saturday and defeated No. 5-4A Knoch 68-53 at the Pittsburgh Basketball Club’s Hall of Fame Classic at Montour High School.

Panthers to tangle with South Side

Second place in Section 3-2A is on the line Tuesday as the Sewickley Academy and South Side Beaver boys basketball teams meet at South Side Beaver High School.

The Panthers are 6-2 in the section standings and in second place behind OLSH (9-0), while South Side Beaver is 6-3 in section play.

Sewickley Academy breezed to a 74-42 victory when the teams met Jan. 4.

South Side (13-5) has won six of seven since the loss and edged Monessen on Saturday at the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Hall of Fame Classic at Moon High School.

The Panthers (9-6) hope to stop a two-game losing streak Tuesday. After an 81-77 section loss to Shenango on Friday, Sewickley Academy fell to 5A Chartiers Valley (13-3) by a 55-39 score Saturday at the PBC Classic at Montour.

QV swimmers set to face Carlynton

A two-meet week of competition begins Tuesday for the Quaker Valley/Sewickley Academy combined boys and girls swim teams as they take on Carlynton at 6 p.m. at Carlynton High School.

The teams hope to bounce back from losses last Thursday against Mars. The girls lost 102-83, while the boys fell 86-68.

QV swimmers recorded 10 qualification times for the Midwestern Athletic Conference championships Feb. 8 and 9 at Moon High School and also posted seven WPIAL qualifying times.

QV returns to the Sewickley Acacdemy YMCA on Thursday against Hopewell.
