The Norwin High School marching band finished first among 28 bands that competed Oct. 7 to win the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in Newark, Del.

Norwin, which has 140 musicians and color guard performers, placed first to win the Bands of America Class AAA championship and finished with the highest preliminary score of all competing bands during the preliminary round. In winning the title, Norwin secured top honors for visual effect.

The band, under the direction of Tim Daniels, performed its 2017 program “RunAway,” which tells the story of leaving home in the country for the big city. The show is based on “City Trees and Instinctive Travels” by Michael Markowski, “Home” by The Passengers and “Moving Parts” by David Sampson.

Bands from Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia performed throughout the day at the University of Delaware.

Norwin competed along with nine other finalist bands during the evening session and again placed first, beating out Green Hope High School from Cary, N.C., and Trumbull High School from Trumbull, Conn.

Along with the overall title, Norwin took home honors for outstanding visual effect and tied with Green Hope for outstanding music in the finals competition.
