Penn Hills residents were glad to see a shuttered store reopen this month on Saltsburg Road.

A former Bottom Dollar Food that closed in January reopened as an Aldi on Oct. 1, and opening day specials kept the parking lot full throughout the day.

Residents who shopped opening day said they were pleased. Plum residents Suzanne and Fred Turba said that they were disappointed when the Bottom Dollar closed and were happy to see a new grocery store in its place.

“We just have to learn the layout of it,” Fred Turba said.

Penn Hills residents Bill and Barbara Jacob said they usually shop at the Aldi in the Penn Hills Shopping Center and said that the stores prices were good, especially on opening day.

“We like Aldis,” Barbara Jacob said. “Their meat and produce is very fresh.”

They said the employees were quick and friendly.

Discount grocery Bottom Dollar was bought by Aldi in November 2014.

The two Bottom Dollar food stores in Penn Hills closed, and only the Saltsburg Road location reopened as an Aldi.

The storefront on Frankstown Road remains for sale.
