Penn Hills Center to add Planet Fitness
New foot traffic could be coming to the Penn Hills Center, and those feet will be clad in athletic shoes.
Planet Fitness, a 24-hour national gym chain, will open a new location next to the downsized Office Furniture Warehouse in the Penn Hills Center on Nov. 24, and developers expect it to bring more shoppers to the center, at the corner of Rodi and Frankstown roads.
“We expect to create a lot of activity in that center,” said Mike McDonough, the vice president of marketing for the local Planet Fitness franchise office.
Penn Hills planning director Howard Davidson said the shopping center is anchored by several stores and offices that keep the plaza busy such as a post office, the Department of Motor Vehicles office, Giant Eagle and the Penn Hills Cinema.
“People will find any new activity at the center to be welcome,” Davidson said. “Other gymnasiums in the area might find it unwelcome though.”
McDonough said that the 24-hour gym is known for its $10 membership and “casual” atmosphere that doesn’t promote body building and intense workouts.
“It’s a gym for regular people,” McDonough said.
The Penn Hills Center is managed by downtown Pittsburgh-based First City Company, which lists more than 45 tenants in the center on its website.
Property managers from the First City Company did not respond to calls for comment about the center, but the company’s website lists nine spaces in the center available.
“All new activity is a good thing,” Davidson said.
