Penn Hills police Sgt. Ronald Como (center) shows off his award with Jon Delano (left) and Larry Dunn, chairman of the Amen Corner law enforcement luncheon committee.

A Penn Hills police officer was honored last month for his quick thinking and courage during a January police call that escalated into a hostage situation.

Amen Corner presented Sgt. Ronald Como the Courageous Act Award on Oct. 24 at the 14th Annual Amen Corner Sen. John Heinz Law Enforcement Luncheon.

“It’s nice to get recognition for something like this,” Como said.

He said that he was one of several police officers who responded to a Jan. 27 call, where they found a man armed with a rifle acting irrationally and threatening a woman.

Upon entering the scene, the suspect pointed the gun at Como, who fatally shot him with his patrol rifle, police said. The officer’s actions potentially saved his own life and the woman’s life, according to Amen Corner.

Como was one of six officers presented with major awards in Allegheny County.

Larry Dunn, chairman of the Amen Corner law enforcement luncheon committee, said awardees are chosen based on heroic actions that go above and beyond the call of duty.

“We really look at life-saving and life-risking acts,” Dunn said. “Sgt. Como really fit into that category.”

Amen Corner receives nominations from police chiefs and law-enforcement organizations throughout the county. Como was nominated by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 91 and Borough and Township Police Association.

Como said that officers in Penn Hills encounter situations like that every few months and that in the moment where the gun was pointed at him, it was his training that helped him.

“We go through a lot of training for stuff like this,” Como said. “That’s what saved my life and the woman’s life.”
