3 from Penn-Trafford High earn Student Emmy nomination

Students from Penn-Trafford High School are nominated for a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Student Emmy Award.

Students Ryan Mickey, Max Haberberger and John Robbins earned a nomination in the general assignment (light news) category for a piece on the Make-a-Wish program.

This past school year, P-T video production students were nominated for five Student Emmy awards, bringing home three.

“It makes me extremely proud,” said adviser and video production teacher Steve Vinton. “They work very hard at what they do, put in the time and they really love it.”

Nominees were selected from high school student entries across the country in 23 programming and craft categories.

This year’s submissions were successfully culled from a record-breaking total of over 2,000 entries from the regional chapters of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Entries were judged by selected industry professionals and media academics.

“The breadth and scope of the work created by these talented students continues to surprise and amaze us as we look to the future of this great industry,” said Danielle Mannion, the academy’s education chair.

Vinton said his students look at everything they do in the studio as a learning opportunity.

“Live television is exciting at any level,” he said. “At this level, they really put themselves out there. Some shows are great, some shows are a train wreck. But we learn from all of them.”

Award recipients will be announced beginning at 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at an awards show in Los Angeles that will be live-streamed by academy officials and hosted by Tom Bergeron, host of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
