Churchill and Allegheny County police, including the SWAT team, investigate a situation on Harmain Road near where the William Penn Highway meets Interstate 376 on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018.
A two-hour SWAT team standoff Wednesday night culminated in a shootout between a Churchill man and police, spurring a temporary shutdown of a stretch of the Parkway East.

The 50-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, was shot twice by police shortly before 7 p.m., Allegheny County police Superintendent Coleman McDonough said.

The standoff began when county 911 medics were called to Harmain Road, near William Penn Highway, about 4 p.m., McDonough said.

As the medic vehicle was about to leave the scene, a woman ran out of a residence and told responders she had just been assaulted by a man who was still inside.

The county's SWAT team arrived about 4:45 p.m.

“After a number of unsuccessful attempt to hail the person from inside the building, our SWAT officers began to fire gunshots,” McDonough said.

Officers fired shots about 6:45 p.m. and again 10 minutes later.

“They did wound the suspect and cautiously entered and took him into custody,” McDonough said.

The man suffered two gunshot wounds and was taken to a trauma hospital, McDonough said. His condition was not immediately available.

“At least two separate times, he shot at the officers,” McDonough said.

The woman had minor injuries, said McDonough. He did not provide her name or age. Officials do not believe the two are married.

Investigators found a large number of weapons in the residence, including long arms, McDonough said.

Charges are pending against the man.
